The Gender Dictionary is a groundbreaking bilingual publication released in 2015, offering an in-depth exploration of gender terms and concepts from a feminist perspective. The dictionary presents 25 key entries, each carefully defined and explained in both Arabic and English. It delves into the history, debates, and localized usages of these terms, shedding light on how they have evolved and traveled across different cultures and transnational contexts. This publication is the first of its kind, designed to bridge linguistic and cultural gaps while promoting a broader understanding of gender.
As part of the design process, I focused on creating an engaging editorial layout that would present these complex concepts in a clear, visually appealing manner. The typefaces, color scheme, and overall structure were thoughtfully chosen to reflect the book's feminist perspective while ensuring an accessible reading experience. Each entry was carefully organized to balance text and visuals, enhancing the clarity of the information presented.
Additionally, for five key terms—Cisgender, MSM (Men Who Have Sex with Men), Orgasm, Queer, and STD (Sexually Transmitted Diseases)—I created handcrafted collages. These collages, which combined tactile artistry with digital manipulation, reflected my role as both a designer and artist. This artistic process allowed me to express these complex terms in a more conceptual, creative way, adding a personal and interpretive dimension to the book.
Beyond the book’s content, I also developed marketing materials, including posters, e-flyers, and social media campaigns, to promote The Gender Dictionary. These pieces were aligned with the book's visual identity and served to extend its reach, encouraging wider conversations about gender while maintaining the publication's integrity and artistic vision.
